Thanksgiving!

When I recall my past Thanksgivings, I realize just how much time has passed by the people who are no longer present around the table or who are new additions. . . some new traditions and old ones missed.

My mom loved Thanksgiving.  She loved having all of her kids gathered together.  I remember coming home from college and being so excited.  As TJ came into the picture, he too had a place in our traditions.  One distinct one I remember is he and my mom making apple pies in the kitchen.  My mom wearing her blue robe, laughing and TJ obediently following her orders.  Jered would help a ton on the actual Thanksgiving Day (which, at my mom's was always the Friday after).  He made the best mashed potatoes (now my husband makes the best mashed potatoes).  We always had broccoli and cheese (later this turned into Diana's garlic steamed broccoli), sauteed mushrooms, mashed potatoes, Turkey, stuffing, labored over gravy, and some other stuff.  It was all made in my harvest gold and avocado green kitchen on appliances of the same colors.  The pies would sit in the white china cabinets, the table cloth would be on the table with the napkins in their rolls.  My mom was real excited when she purchased a thermal gravy boat.

Then, as TJ and I began dating and then marriage, we increased the number of places we had to be.  We needed to go to my aunt's to them and my dad, then to TJ's house (where he eventually took over cooking much of the meal), and then to my mom's on Black Friday.  Instead of shopping, I was helping my mom with the preparations.  After my mom passed, we did Thanksgiving at TJ's parents and then went to my aunt's for desert.

Then Camryn was born.  That set up some new traditions.  We didn't want to travel across the state with a three week old baby, so my side of our family said they would be more than happy to come to us and to bring much of the food.  My brother, Jered, helped TJ a ton that year.  Jason made homemade giant pretzels and we have tried deep-fried turky, grilled turkey and, of course, oven turkey.  The grilled one wins hands down every year.  Aunt Carol and Uncle Mike always bring delicious bread and sea foam salad.  Now that Camryn is older, my family still prefers to travel to here.  Jason and Whitney have made it an annual thing to fly in at Thanksgiving.  Aunt Carol and Uncle Mike drive across the state.  Dad drives south.  Now that Jered has a girl friend, we are seeing less of him, which is understandable.  It is difficult to juggle family visits.  With this new tradition, we greatly miss the Ellis side of our family.  I often wish we all lived closer to one another.  It would allow us to cram more visits with different people in.

The night before Thanksgiving, Jaely and Camryn get a bath and get to use their bath crayons.  Jaely wrote Mama, Papa, and Camryn on the tub.

Soon they may not be able to take baths together.  Both are getting so big!

Jaely couldn't wait until people showed up for Thanksgiving.  At preschool the previous day she was telling her teacher that her Uncle Jason Robot Uncle was coming from Florida ( really from California).  Last year, Jason was talking like a Robot.  Jaely loved it and hated it, until she said "Robot, go get me some more milk please."  We all laughed, and it stuck.  Jaely gave Jason a special Robot ornament for his tree this year.

Grandpa was the first to arrive.  It was perfect timing.  The girls were getting antsy and we had some stuff to get done that is easier to get done when the girls have some new entertainment.
Jaely, with Grandpa's help, made a crib and acted like a baby.

Jason and Aunt Whitney came with gifts.  I got the cutest little owl measuring cup set.  Absolutely adorable!  Jae and Cam got matching Owl aprons.  Jaely has worn it everyday since she opened it.  They also got an awesome coloring book and book.

Camryn liked her apron. . . at first!
TJ and I were too busy to carry Camy around, so she went over to grandpa and put her arms up and said "up, please!"  So cute.  Grandpa was thrilled. . . even if he did catch her cold.
The girls wanted to play dress up.

Then the giant magnifying glass came out.  I love that our girls like to get fancy and then look at bugs under a magnifying glass.  What a great combination!

Jaely asked Jason to make a fort.  He could tell we had done this many times when Jaely ran away and came back with clamps and chip clips.

Coloring in her new book with Aunt Whitney
 Time to feast!

Thanks to the sexy cook- the food was delicious!
The next day we awoke to it snowing.  In our pajamas, we got our winter gear on and headed out to see if we could catch some snowflakes on our tongues.  We were successful!

The slide was super slippery!  So much fun!
 Camryn isn't afraid of anything.
 Hey cutie!

 Showing off her new apron.
The next day, Jaely immediately began asking when people were coming over.  We tried to keep them entertained.  I think the 50th time she asked me, I handed her my phone and told her to call uncle jason!  Until their arrival, we built lots of things with blocks.
Jaely was very proud of what her and TJ built.
When they arrived, they did not have Jered and Wendi with them.  I was bummed.  I miss my oldest brother too and didn't get to see him at all.  Jaely took advantage of a napping Camryn to play some games with her aunt and uncle.  TJ won both times and Jaely cried because she didn't.  That was the first time anything like that has happened.

We pretended to be in preschool. Jaely was the teacher.  That was interesting.  Then, Jaely put on a show of the grandest kind in Christmas tights and a sun dress!

Thank you Uncle Jason and Aunt Whitney for traveling so far away.  It was wonderful to hang out with you!

Some thoughts and memories make me sad and kind of melancholy.    There are people I miss greatly because they are either gone or eating somewhere else, but it is cool to see how families change and new traditions are started.  Jaely knows Thanksgiving as the holiday when family comes over, especially her Uncle Jason and Aunt Whitney.  Who knows, maybe there will be another addition to our family next year.

Camryn's Birthday is Coming!

I have been busy getting the girls ready for Halloween and then it will be Camryn's birthday party before we know it. Instead of making invitations, I made a picture one on Shutterfly. I love how easy Shutterfly is and their products always turn out so nice. Since it is a family only party, I thought family could use a nice picture of her, as well as the invitation.

Help Please!

Hi Friends,

Can you feel it? It's autumn! My class could really use help with supplies in order to finish off the school year strong. So I've created a classroom project request on a 501(c)3 charity website called DonorsChoose.org.

I'm writing to ask for any donations possible for my students - no matter the size, it will help my kids. This week only, any donation you make to my project will be doubled! If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. Your tax-deductible donation will have a direct impact on at least 30 students (and many more in the future), and you'll hear back from our class about your impact on our learning!

To learn more or donate:
  1. Visit my Teacher Page, http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/1492907
  2. Choose one of my projects, enter the amount of your donation, and click "Give"
  3. During check-out, enter the word PUMPKIN where it says "Match or gift code", and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar.
The PUMPKIN match code will double your donation until the end of the day on Monday, October 15. So exciting!

Please feel free to send me any questions you may have, and know that my students and I greatly appreciate your support.

Happy Fall!

Sitting on the Porch During a Sunset

The girls are in bed and i am sitting on a porch as the sun sets over the hill.  There is a cool breeze, but with my pajamas and a pair of socks, the temperature is just perfect.  I feel like i can finally relax now that the girls are down.  Camryn is going on three days with no naps.  We have kept her busy, which means TJ and I haven't had any down time either.  Camryn fell right asleep tonight, as did Jaelynne, but Camryn just awoke with a startle.  She needed some cuddles in order to settle back down.  I love Camryn cuddles.

I have been anticipating bedtime for the girls with great excitement.   I have been loving hanging out with them all day during vacation, seeing their pure joy, excitement and amazement as they have discovered new things, interacted with family, and gotten special treats.  But, we have been going non-stop, pushing them to their limits and they have withstood a great amount with little sleep.  They have been so patient and so kind.  Tomorrow we are going to have to take it easy, as i know Camryn is going to have a rough night.  She often does when she is so sleep deprived.  She will wake up upset.

We took the girls on a pontoon boat all day yesterday.  It was truly amazing to hang out with family on beautiful Torch Lake and giving them experiences that will help shape who they are and will make even more dendrite connect in their brain.  We are making memories, memories of the best kind.

Today we hung out in Traverse City and roamed around downtown, eating good food, and wandering into cute shops.  Jaely walked the entire time, except she rode on her papa's shoulders on the way back to our car.  She was a trooper.  Carmryn got so sick of sitting in the stroller, but didn't seem to mind while she was licking my ice cream.  TJ and i have had many date night/days in Traverse City.  Today was much different in good and bad ways.  Camryn has extend-o arms, which can swing out and grab anything.  She was a little tricky.  Jaely was really good at just pointing and not touching, but she got a little bored.  My favorite bookstore was our last destination, and it didn't go so well.  After putting Jaelynne in time out in the store, she continued to be a handful and Camryn was only happy if you kept moving her stroller, so it wasn't worth it.

Tonight, Angie and Matt made a fiesta dinner.  Jaelynne is discovering that they are "nice"  It is so nice to spend extended time with family, instead of just a few hours here and there.  It was so awesome food!

I love being a mom to our two girls and i love that i have a good team player in this parenting thing, but at times i just get tired.  Vacation is really not about relaxing anymore.  It is just doing the same thing in a different place.  Don't get me wrong, that is a good vacation.  I get tired of going through the motions at home all the time, but it really is evident when you are the only ones with kids.  We have to get four people ready for the beach, or the boat, or a day of shopping.  We can't just leave at a drop of a hat.  Angie and Matt were going for a night swim and invited us.  We have two girls who depend on us who are sleeping in the bedroom that we will also soon sleep in.  It is such a line to cross that no one fully realizes until they cross it.  Camryn still makes poopy diapers, snack still needs to happen, baths need to be given, and sippy cups filled.  But, it is done on gorgeous beaches and with family members or on the covered porch with a beautiful sight or on the sidewalk in downtown Travers City.

And then, after i relax, I can hardly wait to sneak into the bedroom and stare at my beautiful daughters sleeping so peacefully, like little angels.  I love being a mom.

Pink Impatiens

Sometimes carrying on traditions almost seem like an obligation, but most times they feel like a privilege.  This year, we decided not to do hanging baskets this summer.  We are going to be gone a lot this summer, and baskets cannot take the negligence.  We did get a few annuals for some pots that sit out where the rain can at least get them.  I slipped out of the house, got my gardening gloves on and armed myself with a shovel.  I immediately saw Jaely watching me out of the living room window, so i motioned for her to join me.  Her face lit up.  She ran to get her flip flops and showed up in her dress with a smile on her face.

Once she got outside, we got her little gardening kit and put her gloves on.  We could only find one and she was okay with that because it was her left hand that we had.  She picked up her shovel and was ready to help.  She wanted to help get the "sol" out of the giant bag that was as tall as she was.  She learned why we put a wood chip or rock over the hole in the bottom of the pot and why the pots even have holes in the first place.  She learned how to make a little hole in the rich, black "sol" and how to tap the bottom to get the plant out of the plastic holder.  She learned how to pat and gently push and how the smaller plants go in the front and how it is nice to have something to hang off the side.  Jaely really wanted a little pot of pink impatiens that she could call her own, so she got one.  I realized how causally i was able to throw around names of flowers like my mom did- "the Nicotania is taller so we are going to want to put that towards the back."  That means Jaely, too will know names of flowers just by being in the garden with me.  She will pick up on those names.

I remember doing these same things with my mom.  In fact, I am stuck on pink impatiens because of my mother.  Other colors are not even an option.  She (and later, i) would fill her whole center garden with pink impatiens.  They would surround her silver/pink peonies and roses as they filled the whole garden that wrapped around three trees.  They filled in wonderfully as a perfect shady/sunny garden spot.  I weeded with my mom, planted flowers, transplanted, divided, pruned, and watered with and for my mom.

So, you can understand my delight as my oldest daughter's enthusiasm to come and help her mom plant flowers overflowed from her body.  I have traditions to pass down, like pink impatiens.
Nicotania, potato vine, coleus, pink impatiens, geranium

Gardening

After the girls went down, i headed out to weed, preen, and water.  I am so at peace in my garden.  I enjoy getting sweaty, seeing immediate results of weeding, and feeling dirt under my nails.  I cannot wait to plant the few flowers that we got at weesies today.  I worked a lot in the front, too.  I needed to weed and rake a bit.

I would have loved to garden with my mom today like i used to.  She would have liked to visit us and after hugging the girls, i am sure she would head out to check out the garden.  That was the first place she used to show visitors who came to our house.
